Smokin' Jo
Smokin Jo is Defected's only female DJ, yet she disguised the fact she is a woman when she first began to spin at Trade parties. Believing that women were second best on the DJing scene, Jo adopted the nickname of the famous boxer, Smokin' Joe Frasier, in order to appear as a man on the flyers. Luckily for her, one of Trade's regular DJs had fallen ill and Jo was invited to step up in his place. Her success behind the decks at Trade ensured that she was to hold a residency for two and a half years. She once almost got herself sacked for playing Michael Jackson's “ Black Or White ”, a move which the promoter did not like but was a very novel idea which pleased the crowd and ultimately swung the promoter in her favour. Smokin' Jo is the only female DJ to have won DJ Mag's 'DJ Of The Year' award.

As the same that she was moving upwards in the DJ world, Jo was attracting the attention of modelling agencies, who helped steer her onto the front covers of several glamour magazines.
