Opium Scumbagz ( Opium Scumbagz ) Click to here a sample of Opium Scumbagz ( Opium Scumbagz )
Tribal bongo drums, maracas, wooden blocks, tin drums and a driving Latin piano melody form the components of “ Opium Scumbagz ”. Olav Basoski chooses to improve the record with a some short harmonious female vocals which correspond with waltz-sounding organ keys. A fantastic carnival tune throughout which the prominent percussion is relentless, and one which no-one can avoid moving their hips to.

The Mystical Dub has some swirling, dubbed piano which is bolted to hollow drums. Surprisingly, a rasp takes centre stage while the vocal remains virtually untouched.

Windjammer Landing Click to listen to a clip of Windjammer Landing
Heavier bass and short, sharp claps distinguish “ Windjammer Landing ” from the previous tracks on the disc. A teasing Cuban trumpet loop is layered over the Carribean percussion, and Olav keeps snatching it back before rolling the whole melody at the breakdown. Towards the end, the trumpet is filtered out and the bass is lifted.

Opium Scumbagz ( Olav's Hot 'n' Sweet Dub ) Click to hear a clip of Opium Scumbagz ( Olav's Hot 'n' Sweet Dub )
This is a chilled affair from Olav. A soft piano carves the mellow, which the trumpets and vocals follow with ease. Additions to the soothing, but not slow, vibe are timbales and a flute solo. The breakdown is signified with a pan pipes and human drum machine combination, after which Olav reapplies all of his tools to the mix.

Opium Scumbagz ( Opium Scumbeatz ) Click to listen to Opium Scumbagz ( Opium Scumbeatz )
Olav Basoski's darker version of “Opium Scumbagz” has all the original percussion and whistles, but has taken the rasping noise from the Cleptomaniacs' mix. The congo drums have been moved upwards in the mix, and so take centre stage alongside a short shouting sample and a loud tin drum. Unfortunately, despite there being lots of banging and crashing, this mix is disappointing for me as there is no melody to follow.

12” Vinyl Remixes ( DFECT20R ) »
Opium Scumbagz ( Cleptomaniacs' Club Mix )
The Cleptomaniacs are sample heavy disco producers in the same vein as Full Intention, and so are predictable in style yet consistent in quality. They do a damn good job of taking this track away from the hard latin thump of the original and into a more tasty carnival disco workout. Stock Defected beats are present and after a typically medium length intro, a smooth bassline and funky guitar are introduced, with sporadic whistles and percussion being thrown into the melting pot. Everything is conveniently arranged and the whole affair flows well. 3 marks for tight production and 1 extra mark for the source material giving an extra zing to the track.

Swag New Prescription Dub
SWAG are a remix duo who are hard to catergorise but always seem to produce something a bit special. This is a really dubbed out affair with snippets of the vocal and whistles echoing up, down and around, and a tough, gritty sub-bassline works really well to pull all of the parts together. The beats are percussive and at 131 B.P.M., they are quite fast but everything works well together. All in all, this is a create and quite far-out reworking of the original, but it's pulled off in a very slick style.
