Crisp bass alternating with hand claps encompass Defected's most successful release to date. Paul Johnson's simplistic groove is created with looped percussion, chunky bass and his voice saying, “Down, down, down.” A short piano sample is added, which moves down the scale during the voice-charged breakdown. Despite not being ground-breaking, “ Get Get Down ”, is a bass and piano concoction which is a sure hit on the dancefloor.

Choo Choo's Subcriminal Mix is built around a simple three key piano hook which is mirrored by a darker, almost unheard piano line. The remix is treble heavy, and Harry Romero has decided to slice up the vocals as well as intesecting snippets of a female voice too. Throughout the track, Harry Romero adds and removes channels of sound to create breakdowns and pure adrenaline moments.

Two heavily filtered and equalised flourishing trumpet loops contrast alongside Paul Johnson's echoed rough vocals. A standard Defected bassline shakes its way through the track, while the usual wooden block, maracas and cymbal are buried deep within the percussion. An organ/cowbell hybrid adds diversity to a remix which is definitely one for the dancefloor.

Disc Two ( DEFECT7CDX ) »
Latin Excursion
The beginning of this track consists of a Spanish guitar solo which breaks into what would be the piano section. A barrage of percussion is provided by a whole range of drums, maracas and wooden blocks. More noise is added by Paul Johnson with pianos and trumpets adding more flavour to this South American dancefloor favourite. The Spanish guitar takes a front seat in the mix and plays complimentary riffs to the other instructions, which are pushed to the back by Paul Johnson. This Latin Excursion is undoubtedly very energetic and has all the pre-requisites for a Latin track.

Sounds Of Life Dub Mix
Sounds Of Life use tight kick drums and filtered samples at the beginning. A quirky synthesiser piano chord bubbles upwards through the mix, closely accompanied by the vocals, which are kept over the groove for only a short period. The remixers bring in a four note trumpet loop and a secondary loop, which appears to add a flourish to every fourth bar. I liked this Sounds Of Life mix, because they were enough layers of noise to bind the track together, even with the regular Paul Johnson-sung vocals.

XXX Remix Click here to listen to clip of the XXX Remix
Full of drums, maracas, whistles and whooping, the XXX Remix is basically the Original Mix but with more of everything. Paul Johnson's vocals are roboticised somehwhat while the piano hook has been sent through the filter and ends up sounding like a distorted alarm. Admitedly, not one of my favourite mixes because I feel that the remixer added unnecessary sounds to a perfectly good original.

Sounds Of Life Cariola Mix
Speedier than their dub, this Sounds Of Life mix starts in a similar way: the boys added new channels at regular intervals to build up their mix gradually. Their chosen musical weapons for this mix are a simple four note synthesiser loop and a twangy guitar lick and some simple luscious strings and pads. This less energetic effort is match by flatter vocoded vocals.

Get Get Down (Two Step Mix) Click here to listen to clip of the Two Step Mix
This bootleg two-step version of “ Get Get Down ” features a ripped vocal and hi-hats placed over a tight two step groove with the ocassional, “Busted” vocal snatch. Before the breakdown, the piano line is replaced using plink-plonk keys, while on the lead up to the breakdown, an alarm is placed below the vocal. The beats are standard and the vocal is not of the highest quality, but, despite that, the track is interesting.
